Weekend Post 01: Is It Wednesday Yet?

T-4 days until we leave for the Bahamas! It’s almost unreal how soon we will be enjoying the sun and 75-degree weather instead of clouds and whatever this current rain/snow/fog mix is. Since we obviously don’t have class on Saturdays, today’s is all about getting ready! I started today by going over my packing list to make sure I have the essentials, and George is heading out to buy some last minute items for the trip. In case you lost your packing list, here’s what the two of us are working on gathering today:
It’s packing time!
As December 5th gets closer, it’s time get some shopping done! I went out today and bought a set of watercolors so I can work on a few projects while we’re down there. Those are going straight into my backpack so I can take them on the plane. Ms. Swain reminded us yesterday to make sure we also bring a few essentials with us in our backpacks in case we don’t have immediate access to our luggage when we arrive in Eleuthera, so I also made sure to put in an extra swimsuit, a change of clothes, and lots of sunscreen that I can use as soon as we get down there. I also packed a camera so I can capture all of the fun things we do from the very first day. I have my watch so I’m never late (trying to limit the number of pushups we do), and I brought a pair of headphones for the plane. I’ve still got a few things to add to my backpack, but I’ve got plenty of time (or so it seems).
My backpack is ready to go!
I still have a lot more packing left to do (including my entire suitcase), but I’d say this is a pretty good start. I see a few trips to CVS in my near future to pick up some travel-sized items, but as of now, even just packing my backpack has gotten me even more excited for our trip. Next stop: lots of plastic bags (thanks Ms. Swain)!

As I start off my day, the first thing I wake up thinking about is the last minute shopping that I have to do in order to be ready for the Bahamas! After my daily morning routine, I sit down at my piano (yes, I play the piano) and think about the ten days I will be away from my instrument. Because this saddens me, I practice for a little bit (I also have a piano lesson in an hour). I am sure my peers also have something they will miss during our time away in the Bahamas whether it be their family, sports, or dog.

As I drive down the highway to Oberlin Conservatory, where my piano lesson is held, my excitement to travel to the Bahamas escalates as my car represents us moving forward through time, which brings us closer and closer to Wednesday at 5 am, when we will head for the airport! At the same time, I will deeply miss listening to Liszt’s Sonata in B minor or his Après une lecture du Dante - Fantasia quasi sonata,S161/7 and other songs at the Island School. It really be like that.

After my piano lesson, I journey to Just Add Water in Fairview Park, OH for my prescription scuba/snorkeling goggles. While the Island School will provide all the gear required for such activities, I will need to purchase my own pair of special prescription goggles since I wear glasses. Just Add Water is a dive shop which specializes in helping divers of all ages, and Chris, who helped me find what I was looking for, was a very knowledgeable and helpful person. Not only did he help me fit my prescription goggles, he also made sure I was not lacking in diving equipment. Out of his suggestions, I bought a special marine sunscreen as normal sunscreen will damage the fragile coral that is characteristic of reefs. Interestingly, Chris was familiar with the Eleuthera region because he lived in the Bahamas for 3 years! While the customer service was outstanding, the price was not. Yikes, $190 with tax and no discounts.

My new prescription goggles
My corrective lenses (my left eye is worse than the right) and the coral-friendly sunscreen

Sea you later,
Emma and George
